Screen time worth talking about.

You do not need to know what your child is watching. You do not need to have the answer. Children in kindergarten should have someone sit with them. For older children, sitting with them is up to you. The films are grouped by age. All that is left is one question when the film ends, and then listening to the end.

One film a day
Kindergarten children should have someone sit with them. Older children can watch together or alone. Suggested time: 15 minutes for ages 3 to 5, 25 for ages 6 to 8, 30 for ages 9 to 11, 40 for ages 12 to 14 and 55 for ages 15 to 18.

Ask one question
Two minutes at most. There is no right or wrong answer.

Put the screen down and talk for a minute
That is all.

Miss a day and it does not matter. Start again tomorrow.

Three questions for after the film

Remember these three and you are set. Ask them at the dinner table or anywhere else. Any one will do, in any order. Short of time? Ask one.

What surprised you most today?
If you were there, how would you feel, or what would you do?
What is the same, or different, compared with our home, or with when your grandparents were young?

How to listen

Your child answers first. The family answers after, if they want to.
Listen to the end, then ask one more question at most.
Do not say right or wrong. Do not sum up a lesson.
If your child does not answer, say "Let's try again tomorrow" and leave it there.
Answers can be in any language you speak at home.

After 14 days

Fourteen days is the start, not the finish. From day 15 you do exactly the same.

One film a day, one question a day. Teenagers do not need to be asked at all. Tell them once that they can tell you whenever they like.
Children choose more and more themselves, both the topic and the film. The older they get, the more they pick.
Time per day grows with age, on the same scale as above.
If your child asks for the same film again, or the same topic for several days, let them. They are choosing.
